If you have setup the printer using the lp daemon in linux, here's what you
need to do to set it up within UniVerse.

1. Create a file that contains the following line: cat -|lp -d<printer name>.
For example, our printer name is LP61 so our file contains cat -| lp -dLP61
Also, we did a chmod 555 filename to make it read & executable by everyone.
2. Now within the uv admin, maintain device, setup a new printer with the
following fields:
        Pathname: /dev/null
        Driver /path/to/file/filename
        Lock File 1 /path/to/file/lockname
You should be able to keep the other fields the default, with the exception
of printer name and queue

This has worked for us on JetDirect printers and windows shared printers, again
as long as you have set them up in Linux using the lp daemon. Easiest way for
that would be to use the printconf-gui tool.

Hope this helps.
Thanks
Marc

Subject: [U2] Setting a Network Printer in Linux

I have tried reading the manual. How can I set up access to a network
printer under UV 10 with Linux Redhat 9.0. From the Linux shell I can
successfully print, but from UV all I get is the following message every
minute or so...

"Unable to open device. Verify that the printer is on line..."

Thanks in advance,
Marc
