It's commonly called "phishing". You'll get the same thing with stolen graphics from your bank, paypal, banks you don't have anything to do with, credit cards, etc. It's from people who hope that you're a) a customer of the institution they're spoofing, and 2) gullible enough to provide them with info - passwords, SS#, etc.

I just received an email from the admissions server at Hamilton College in New York. Any of you people on the list? It said my email account would be closed
if I didn't fill out a form that was attached. Of course I didn't open it
because I have nothing to do with Hamilton College. Anybody else receive this
email? Sounds like a virus.
