Not answering your question directly, but I'd like to mention that I
tend to CREATE.INDEX FILENAME FIELDNAME NO.NULLS because that way the
index is much smaller, and consequently much speedier to use...  In
which case, the index won't be any help at all when selecting with
FIELDNAME EQ ""
