I haven't used universe since version 9.5--about 5 years. Back then we would see the "printer segment removed" a few times a month when people were logging in from scratch. Generally it was a case where someone had hit up against a readu lock and closed their telnet session rather than waiting. At some future point someone else would open telnet, get the same pseudo-tty, and then get the printer segment removed message. It almost always went badly, with terminal i/o getting messed up, and could only be fixed by tracking down the process hanging on the lock.
