Thanks, Adrian & Louis. I should have remembered about making the line longer to allow for control characters - I do this for CSV files at times. Mike, I do SETPTR mode 3 CAPTURING HOLD.ID, and later on SPOOL &HOLD& FIELD(HOLD.ID,' " ', 2). Can't remember why the FIELD is necessary, but it all works well.
