I vote to remove it from the compiler. That's the only way it will be retired. Otherwise, it's here and if you have to support thousands of legacy programs, like I do, you learn to make the most of it.
My clients would throw me (and MV) out if I told them that they *have* to replace their (4 letter word) coding with non (4LW) coding. It's invisible to them. I don't have the luxury of creating new, clean applications that can embrace non-4LW techniques. If I am asked to make changes to proven, existing programs containing 4LW, the house rules prevail. I can't justify turning a 30 minute modification into a 2 hour one as I gently parameterize the change with dancing around 4LW. It is more straightforward in many cases. Fear is often synomous with mis-understanding. People are 4LW phobic based on its historic mis-use. Properly used, it's often a lot more readable and manageable than its alternate.
