We have been running Uv 10.1.0 for just about 2 years now on RH 8.0
uptime on our production machine is 261 days, and last downtime was only to
insert another scsi controller to external backup.

We came from a Digital Alpha running Thru64 4.0e so no fnuxi was needed on the
files..

We have attached about 15 printers, some of them cant have different logical
units, so i had stair stepping
problems on them, but was able to solve it by modifying the jobs on the spooler.

No real problems have been experienced, even our cron file ran unmodified...

I did spend some time to setup ssh, and to change a few perl scripts to support
the new environment
but with CPAN it's a matter of minutes to get your perl inst. up to speed :-)

I have tried the same setup on fedora 4, gentoo, debian 3.1 testing, centos
(rhes 3 without the redhat).
if you check required glibc/libc on IBM's website against the linux you plan to
run on and you have same or higher version then you should have no problems...
Universe does not require a certain distro, all that is needed is a minimum
version of glibc/libc

There is a small difference between the way redhat/suse systems handle the
uv.rc script
suse does everything according to the unix way, whereas the redhat dudes had no
clues about unix when they started, so they adopted their own standard, but if
you choose redhat, then the inst. script is made for redhat

best regards from a happy linux user

Emne: [U2] Universe running on Linux/SuSE

We have a finance system with around 200 users running Universe 9.6 on
Sun Solaris OS 8. For various reasons, we are considering moving to a
Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SuSE Enterprise Linux environment. The
Universe/Linux OS release combinations we are initially considering are
as follows:

Universe 10.1.1 with RHEL V3
Universe 10.1.12 with SuSE EL

Just wondering how many of you have gone through similar Unix to Linux
OS changes? What issues should we be aware of prior to this change? More
specifically:

- Are there issues when converting Universe data files from
Unix/Solaris OS to Linux?
- Is there difficulty getting printers to function properly on Linux?
- Are changes required to any scripts and/or cron daemons running
scripts on Linux?
- Has Linux proven to be more or less stable than Unix?
- Has anyone had success running the Universe/Linux combinations listed
above or had success running other combinations?
- Any major issues with Universe 10.1.1/10.1.12?

I apologize in advance if my questions are a bit too broad. I am simply
interested in gaining basic knowledge on the feasibility of running
Universe on Linux, and any pitfalls to be aware of. Any information
provided will prove valuable as we continue our discussions on a
possible move from Unix to Linux.

Thank you in advance for your comments!
