Many *nixes actually distribute vim and make vi a link to it, running in vi compatibility mode. :) 'which vim' or 'whereis vim' at a unix shell prompt should tell you if that's the case. If so, getting the latest version (6.4) will let you use all the features (short of version 7, which is still in beta).
