Exactly what I needed to know. I just diagnosed them with a disk
controller failure and they may have to rebuild onto new disks. I'll see
what their last good savevg looks like and see if we can't get a full
uvbackup to cover the data issues.

The savevg command backs up a Volume Group (a collection of logical and
physical disk space). We do the same thing on our AIX machine to cover
against total hardware failure. A new machine would require the
operating system (rootvg) and then we could "import" out saved volume
group to the new machine with the minimum of fuss. I do not believe the
resulting backup image can be interrogated for individual files (or any
other _individual_ parts).
This is not a data backup in case of accidental file corruption - this
is catastrophe protection.
