Susan,

I don't know about "clever", but we wrote two programs, TAPE.DUMP and
TAPE.LOAD, to dump any named, or all, dict and/or data files in an account
from any mv database to any other mv database.

The T-DUMP HEADER contains the file size parameters, and the TAPE.LOAD
program will create the new file before it loads it if it does not exist.

To date, we have tested it successfully *from* AP, mvBase and R91, *to*
Universe/NT.

We have jBASE in house and will be glad to configure it *from* jBASE if that
will help.

In case there is no 1/4-inch cartridge tape drive installed on either the
source or target machine, we have an external Tandberg QIC tape drive and
two external scsi controllers (one with a USB connector and one with a PC
card and cable connector).

These are easy to install and provide us a portable and compatible tape
interface.

I haven't taken any timed measurements, but T-DUMPS and T-LOADS seem to go
about a fast as ACCOUNT-SAVEs, which is a lot faster than
terminal-emulator-based file transfers.

Please contact me if you would like more detailed information on these
programs.

hth,

Dave
