That's it, yes. I've used this to send messages between processes. But
using them can be less than straightforward. The GCI manual refers to
UVCreatePipe and related functions, that look more likely to be more
robust.

I think it it means a Unix pipe file (fifo queue) that you create with
the "mknod <pipename> p" command (on hp-ux) rather than anything to do
with the | symbol.
Well, it's sort of fifo.... so long as your reader doesn't fall over!
