You don't have to do that with Google groups. You can set your subscription to "No Email", "Every post as a separate Email", a traditional "Digest Mode" and an "Abridged" mode which sends a daily summary of each thread (number of new posts, a breif clip from the thread (I think it's the most recent post).
So, you wouldn't have to use the web interface for daily replies if you didn't want to.
