Allen, if you mean "are there common roots between MUMPS and Pick?" the answer is no. There are similarities in the way data is accessed as far as item, attribute, value, subvalue, but MUMPS/Cache' goes much further into N dimensions of named or numbered hierarchies. There are many similarities in the history of the software, personalities and passion in the communities, and both platforms have always been strong in the healthcare industry. The platforms have never shared code, but as Chuck says, InterSystems is now working on MV compatibility. This means Cache' will soon have a migration path for Pick shops that want to use existing code and data structures to take advantage of the InterSystems Marketing machine, which is absolutely phenomenal. InterSystems has made Cache' a recognized and acceptable name across many channels in the IT industry. This is something MV marketing departments have never done and don't seem to have any interest in doing. So if you walk into a new prospect and tell them you are running over Cache', you may have the same credentials as you do with the claim that you are running over an IBM database in the DB2 family. This can be a very bad or very good thing for the MV market. It will be bad as developers and end-users get pulled away from this market, expediting the shrinking of the traditional Pick/MV market. It will be good if Cache' lends credibility to Pick and that translates to improved reception for "real" Pick-based applications. It's all a matter of marketing. I believe we can use this opportunity to our advantage, but I've been a Picky too long now to have much faith that this market will take advantage of marketing opportunities that stare us in the face. For now, I'd say anything that gives MV VARs an opportunity to sell more apps is a good thing, so I recommend people keep an eye on InterSystems and consider adding Cache' to their list of supported platforms.
