Hi Dave,

Not sure about Universe, but in Unidata there is the braces function which
when fed a dict name and a few other things, will pull out that data exactly
as it would if it had been in a LIST statement. It is very easy to then
just build a program that will go to a list of dict names, and format them
into a csv format and write them to a file.

In fact, I have a group of programs (actually an entire module) that does
this under the Manage-2000 system that is used to create an interface with
Demand Solutions Forecasting. I had to include this capability so that
someone by just entering dict names in a screen, could 'customize' the data
to be downloaded to Demand Solutions without having to modify the program.

They would take some tweaking to port them to Universe and to modify to your
client's needs, but I'd be happy to provide those to you if you wish.
Probably most of the work would be to eliminate the structures in place that
are specific to the Demand Solutions stuff. Combine that with Accuterm's
ability to download files, and it sounds like a solution to me.

Just contact me off line!

Allen

Subject: [U2] Importing Data from Universe into Excel

One of my customers is interested in extracting data from Universe into
Excel
by himself without having to have a program written for each import to
Excel.

If he learns the names of the files and their dictionaries, and which
attributes are multi-valued, or even sub-valued, (and of course Excel),
what
strategies are available to him - eg. SQL commands, a macro in Excel, Web
Services (next rel. of Universe), some reporting product designed to import
data from Universe, etc.?

The customer is considering a server upgrade using XP Pro, and I'm trying to
talk him into W2003, so any strategies that would require IIS or something
else that W2003 includes that is not offered by XP Pro will strengthen my
argument.

I am scheduled to discuss this with the customer again Monday morning about
10:00 AM Pacific Time, so any thoughts you can provide will be greatly
appreciated.

Many thanks,

Dave
