Sorry for responding to my own ad/response but Bill Haskett's note reminded me...
mv.NET does not require server-side schema definitions or other flat definitions of the existing data, because it does not use ODBC/OLEDB to get into the server, so VSG is not required. Normal Select/Sort type queries (broken up into logical chunks) can be used and there are tools that come with the software to build queries, etc. More SQL-like queries will be supported in the near future for people who are unfamiliar with MV and are charged with extraction of data from an MV environment.
