No, this is not the 'right' way to do it. 

Your terminal emulators should be pointing at a DNS [Alias] Name, not an
IP address.
So should your ODBC / OLEDB connections, your UniAdmin clients and
everything else.

Then when you want to swap over to a new server, you just amend your DNS
entry.
I first did this [with a Netware DNS server as it happened] over a
decade ago, so it's hardly bleeding-edge technology.

If your hosts file has more than about a dozen entries, it is, IMHO,
broken.
At my previous site /etc/hosts contained only the other members of the
production cluster, the primary and secondary DNS servers, the primary
and secondary NTP servers and the default gateway.  That was it.
