As long as you suspend the write, snapshot the database, and restore the writes the impact should be minimal. It takes 2 second for us to accomplish this part of the process. We then rsyn to a separate physical machine so we only incur the affect of the read operation on our production machine. You would have to do some testing to see how long the actual rsync took to be sure it didn't take more time that the backup interval.
