Bill,

You need to put a space after the asterisk to designate a comment in a
paragraph - that is "* This is a comment" works, but "*This is a comment"
doesn't. If you don't put a space after the asterisk, then UniVerse thinks
you're calling a globally-cataloged program directly, and you'll usually get
an error since that "program" doesn't exist. If I recall correctly, being
able to directly call a globally-cataloged program from the command line is
a feature that came from Prime Information.
