My point was, why should I have to code any of that manually? Or even WANT to? I totally understand my data and the XML file -- I just don't have time for 'make work' - I gain little from manually building the EXT, and indeed, increase the odds something will be wrong.
If I have both items, I should be able to drag and drop and the mappings (XMAP and EXT) should be done FOR me - I'm lazy like that. I totally get that I might have to have different 'pairs' of data - that is, I can't control what others call their fields, but the logic of 'mapping' should be the same. Drag CUST_NAME to map to our CLIENT.NAME field. I should just specify if I want an EXT or an XMAP (in or out). I was just amazed the tool only handled half of the job - you can get XML out, but not in --- that is, you could not even consume the file that you just created without *manually* building the EXT! That strikes me odd.
