Hi

Re [U2] Storing images on U2 database.

* We have approached this same problem a little differently in the
CVT Crop Trials DB. Being unaware of the ASSIGN SYSTEM(1017) etc
function we decided to be "otherwise cunning".
* We were aware that ftp worked well and did not corrupt the data
if binary copy was used. The cited problem has not been one we have
experienced when ftp is used and you stay out of UV for that part of the
process.
* We set up a type 19 file which we use simply as a Linux
directory to store the files in (DOCUMENTS). We do not use UV to put or
get the files.
* We then set up a separate Universe Type 30 file (DOC-DETS) that
has data related to the (DOCUMENTS) store file: DOC-DETS has: Field 1 =
File Category, Field 2 = Sub Category, Field 3 = Description and Field 4
is the file name and directory.
* We then used our VB interface (currently still in VB5) - to
enable users to save any file(s) - eg Word files, adobe files etc to the
DOCUMENTS file,
* At the same time we write appropriate categories, notes etc to
the DOC-DETS file.
* Users can also use the same VB interface, to retrieve file(s) -
the search facilities are used on the DB to select the file(s) required
and those file(s) are ftp'd back to the PC.
* This is fast and efficient.

* We've actually done this twice - once to store documents related
to trials and crop varieties and another file to store .jpg photos and
site maps etc. Each have their own related document details file.
* But, Trial and variety photos are stored with ids related to the
trials they were attached to and data searches can include the structure
and information that belongs to the trial information as well as the
document details to select files. This works particularly well - it is
easy to select for a variety out of the thousands of trials stored then
collect photos with their information and save them all to the users PC.
* Again ftp does the copying for us and very well.
