The problem occurs on our Solaris box and the solution we use is to use the delete key instead of the backspace.
The problem does not occur on our Linux box. So it is not the terminal settings as they are the same. Most likely this "Many Unix and Linux systems are not set up to correctly filter controls like backspace until *after* you log in and your environment is set up. You need to set your system to do the pre-login filtering." Is the problem.
