The basic first place to look is the object interface supplied with Universe - either uniobjects or uniobjects.net or uniobjects for java.
You can do pretty much anything with this tho you will have to build the front and back end yourselves. As mentioned Redback may be of benefit if you are really looking at a proper piece of middleware as opposed to just getting the front and back end talking.
