That's what I was afraid of.  I was hoping to avoid the overhead of an
EXECUTE/PERFORM.  Also, I was hoping for a solution which did not incur the
i/o overhead of determining an item's existence in the file... Only to which
group it would hash.

I know for certain that there is no BASIC equivalent.

If I recall correctly, however, RECORD sets @SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE with the group
number.
