This was brought home to me once when I was in Europe and bought a prepackaged sandwich. I looked at the sell-by date when I was about halfway through and for a moment thought it had gone bad months before. Then I remembered to flip the month and day and realized that I didn't need to head for the WC and stick my finger down my throat.
