In the U2 support group, we have already drafted an outline for a tech tip on alternate index 'best practices'. Perhaps this dialog will nudge us to get it fleshed out sooner than later.
In the meantime, you can answer the simple question of 'is the index being
used in this query' by using the REQUIRE.INDEX keyword.
