I don't know if this is what you need but here's what I do:

UNIX.CMD = "ls -l"
UNIV.CMD = "SH -c ":QUOTE(UNIX.CMD)
EXECUTE UNIV.CMD CAPTURING OUTPUT

(I don't usually break the Unix and UniVerse commands into separate
lines as I did here - I just wrote it that way for easier reading).
