On the same subject - for linux just create a plain text file /etc/nologin Put whatever message in it you want e.g. "system down, take the day off" and that's it. I normally have a standard /etc/nologin.bak and if we need to stop people logging in just copy it to /etc/nologin. You can still access as root from the console.
