I don't know about system variables, but in unix/UniData you could do a
shell command like

CMD = 'ps -ef | grep PHANTOM | grep -v grep wc -l'
PCPERFORM CMD CAPTURING CAPTURED

This will give you either a number or 0 in CAPTURED
