Well - thanks, I guess. Regarding the internal workings, yes - it would need to work along those lines, especially the 'learning logic' part.
As for not wanting to write a shell, not wanting to change the voc - you're right - my original question (perhaps poorly phrased) was an enquiry as to whether there was an existing mechanism in unidata to call a handler routine in the event of an unrecognised command being entered. Whilst I've never come across such a thing, nor seen anything that suggests it might even exist, I had hoped that someone on the list might be able to give a definitive answer either way.
