It's called "scientific notation"
That's why it is being interpreted as a number.
What it sees this is as a number 0. followed by 28 zeros followed by a 2.

Universe interprets this as a number. UniData doesn't (at least under my current settings).

I'm SURE I've been bitten because UV DIDN'T recognise this sort of thing as a number ...

Something to do with importing data from Excel into UV, using it in a calculation, and having the calculation blow up with a "not a number" error.

I can't remember the details, but I thought I had to put traps in to catch exponential format.

Oh - and I'm not sure you're right calling it "scientific notation". That would be "20e-30" (iirc the power in scientific notation has to be a multiple of 3). If it's written with the most significant digit in the units or tenths position, it's the same principle but a different name.

Cheers,
Wol
