Hi Norm, First, we are a software developer, and I thought you might like to know how our customers do EDI using our EDI Translator, the EC/EDI*Wizard.
Next, since this msg is on the U2 listserv, let me assume that you are running you business software on either Unidata or on Universe - in any case on a multi-user database. So, when I say that the Wizard runs on either mvBase or on Universe, I'm saying that our EDI translator is a multi-user application and can be used simultaneously by as many people as necessary to run your EDI operation - as opposed to the typical single-user EDI translator running on some PC in the "EDI office" where only one person can use it a any one time. I'm also saying that your EDI database is backed up reliably right along with the rest of your business database and is supported by the quality and reliability of the same IT equipment and staff that run your business software. And, because the Wizard runs on your business database, it is programmed in the same language as your business software and is installed with all the source code so that integrating it with your business software can be done by the same staff that supports your business software, or by our staff, or a combination of the two, if you wish. By integration, I mean for example converting Purchase Orders to Sales Orders using the same business rules that you now use in you Order Entry software. This allows qualified Purchase Orders to be converted into Open Sales Orders automatically, without any manual intervention, so your Order Processing staff only has to deal with those Purchase Orders that fail to pass your Sales Order acceptance criteria - eg pricing, available credit limit, product availability, etc. - and our rejection reports tell you why the order failed. So, it won't surprise you when I say that most EDI operations are actually perfomed by the people who process orders as a part of their regular job , because most order processing is acually done by processing EDI Purchase Orders. Ofcourse the Wizard is a map-based translator, so creating a map for any document for any Trading Partner is simply a matter of CLONEing an existing map and modifying it. Each customer usually has a person who is an EDI Specialist (among other areas of specialization) and the EDI Specialist learns to create or modify maps very quickly, often with our help initially and then independently thereafter. Our EDI customers are in both the retail and the grocery sectors, so the Wizard supports many EDI documents, including 850 and 875 Purchase Orders, 940 Warehouse Shipping Orders and 945 Warehouse Shipping Advisories, the 856 ASN, 810 and 880 Invoices, 820 Remittance Advice, and many others. I will be glad to discuss your particular needs with you to help you determine if the Wizard will be a good fit with your needs, and then schedule a demo if you'd like. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes, Dave Dave Taylor Sysmark Information Systems, Inc. We have a very painful, labor intensive way that we do EDI. From the way we create the X12 documents to our users inputing information to be sent in an EDI message. I would like to start evaluating alternative methods to our current practices. All suggestions welcome.
