Whilst this is not a totally valid comparison since your test was done on 
different hardware (mine was on my laptop), it does show that Unidata almost

certainly cannot be using contiguous strings as it would take longer than 
this to copy the data. I have been intrigued by some of the Unidata 
performance figures I have obtained in the past where some things that 
should take a long time are actually very fast while sometimes the opposite 
is true. I am left wondering if there are some clever optimisations being 
done in the compiler. Perhaps someone from the development group will let a 
few secrets out.
