Hi Jerry,
<AD>
We offer a generic Pick print spooler, SpoolerPlus, that runs on Universe
(Windows 2003, XP/Pro, Windows 2000, RHEL and AIX), Unidata (Windows 2000,
XP/Pro, AIX) and QM (XP/Pro) and I believe we can provide you with a
Universe/Windows version of it.
It includes an SP-ASSIGN command that simply creates the same SETPTR
commands that you use today to print to a hold file. Your SETPTR commands
may work with little or no modification.
It provides a HOLD.FILE separate from the &HOLD& file to which all print
jobs are written, from which all print jobs are printed and in which
selected print jobs can be placed on hold subject to the parameters of the
SETPTR command.
As a Pick print spooler, it assigns print jobs to print queues and it
assigns printers to print queues so that each print job is printed to the
printer assigned to its queue, rather than directly to a printer.
And, to support the syntax of the Reality print spooler, is supports named
queues and named printers.
Taking those two thoughts together, you can easily imagine creating named
print queues with the same names as your Windows printers, assigning your
print jobs to the queue named for the printer you wish to print to,
assigning that printer to the queue of the same name and then printing to
that printer, as you do in native Universe. This way you can print to the
printer named in your SETPTR command.
SpoolerPlus also includes the Pick version of the SP-EDIT command and the
LISTPEQS command that lists the contents of the HOLD.FILE in various ways.
The logic behind SP-EDIT and LISTPEQS provides many ways of manipulating
print jobs in the HOLD.FILE and can be easily modified to function like the
commands that you are used to using in Universe/.nix.
In summary, I believe we can fashion a version of SpoolerPlus to function
like the Universe spooler on .nix when installed on Universe on .doz.
I will be glad to arrange a demo of SpoolerPlus with you and discuss your
specific print command support requirements to determine what we need to do
to provide you with a Universe print spooler on Windows.
I have attached the Functional Specifications for SpoolerPlus for your
review.
Please contact me for further discussion.
Thanks for your interest in SpoolerPlus,
Dave

Subject: [U2] Spooler for Windows
What products are out there that mimic the Unix UniVerse spooler in a
Windows environment? From what I can see on Windows, UniVerse uses the
Windows printer subsystem and in my estimation that was a mistake. There's
no retention of print jobs, no form type, no ability to use scripts, it is
the biggest stumbling block for conversion from a 'nix environment. I
would
only like to look at packages that are built to work with UniVerse and are
like the Unix spooler with all the bells and whistles. We have moved from
Unix V5, to Solaris, to RH Linux, and our spooler scripts only needed
minor
changes long the way. Now we are trying to go to Windows and the only
stumbling block the we have encountered is the spooler. We did so much
with
it.
