It depends on how robust your interfacing application is. You're not maintaining a list of all the contents, just the ids. Various ways to do that, however you can still pre-check that each id still exists, so you at least weed out the deletes. By the way, with an INDEX pointer method, this part of your issue should disappear, since it's real-time updating.
