This may not relate to your problem, but I had similar issues setting up a JavaBridge connection. I eventually took the easy route and put the libraries in the /usr/lib/jvm/... your java version install .../jre/lib/ext directory. This directory loads when the network starts up. No need to refer to it in the java code and no need to fiddle with the CLASSPATH variable. The downside is that I also store in-house classes there and need to restart the network anytime I make changes.
