I had my first encounter with barcode printing when laser printers where
expensive and everybody was still using lineflow on line- or dot matrix
printers.
I wrote Basic code to print barcodes on a Panasonic dot matrix printer
using graphics mode once for a client.
It was a real pain since you couldn't print char 255 from Pick and char
0 only on parallel printers.
Later with lasers and PCL5 it was a piece of cake. Just calculate the
check digit, select the right font and you can print your barcode
anywhere on the page.
I even used soft fonts to print pictures on documents.
The only problem with soft fonts is that you need to download them again
every time the power is switched off on the printer.
And that can be a bit of a challenge.
So you really have to build that into your code to make sure the right
font is actually installed on the printer.
If you have to write "a lot" of PCL code then a product like print
wizards seems a good investment, though.
