Why even do it? The 50 bytes of storage are worth the effort? Usually, I prefer to have attibutes 'all the way' to the full definition of a file -- makes it easier to 'prestore' when needed! It's a pain when you need to 'prestore' data into attribute 200, but the record stops at 185 because those other fields were blank!
