There should be a file under /etc somewhere (/etc/security/limits on AIX) named limits, or something similar, in which a parameter (on AIX, it's fsize) defines that limit. Change it to a larger number, or on many unices a "-1" means no limit.

what about using tar?

cd destination ; tar cvf - /sourcetreename | tar xvf -

I think the above will work.
