o Medio to end 2000: Publication of the special issue

Medical prognosis comprises the prediction of the course and outcome
of disease processes, which may concern the natural course and outcome
of disease or those expected after treatment. Prognostic models have
many uses, such as guiding health policy by generating global
predictive scenarios, assisting comparative audit by case-mix
corrected mortality predictions, and selecting appropriate tests and
therapies in individual patient management.

This special issue aims at bringing together various theoretical and
practical approaches to prognosis that comprise the state of the art
in this field. Papers are sought that describe medical prognosis
applications using methods and techniques from artificial
intelligence, decision theory, and statistics as well as papers
proposing theoretical foundations of such methods. The topics relevant
to this special issue include but are not limited to:

o the specification of prognostic models
o representation and reasoning about (multiple) model types
o representation of and reasoning with time
   o qualitative representation and reasoning
   o decision modelling and analysis
   o (dynamic) probabilistic networks
   o function-based representation and reasoning
   o case-based representation and reasoning
o acquisition of medical prognostic models
o automated learning of domain or task prognostic models
o use of logical, set-theoretical or probabilistic methods
o clinical context of actual prognostic models
o role in diagnosis or treatment planning of a specific disease
   o evaluation of prognostic models

This special issue comprises a milestone in a series of successful
events starting with the invited session on prognosis during CESA'98;
the special issue on prognosis of the journal AIM February 1999; and
the workshop on Prognostic Models in Medicine during AIMDM'99 in
Denmark. A selection has been made of the workshop papers of AIMDM'99
which will be included, together with other selected papers solicited
by this call in the MIM special issue.

High quality, original papers that deal with issues of prognosis in
medicine are solicited. The final manuscripts of accepted papers
should not exceed 4 printed pages of Methods of Information in
Medicine. Electronic submissions by e-mail are encouraged (preferably
postscript files). Alternatively, 3 paper copies may be
submitted. Please send contributions to Ameen Abu-Hanna.

submission guidelines please refer to:
