CALL FOR PAPERS

Applied Intelligence: Special Issue on Agents and Process Management

Submission Deadline: March 1st 2001

This special issue will bring together key researchers in the areas of
AI agents, planning, scheduling and control with those in workflow
management and distributed computing. The aim is to explore the
potential AI techniques to support process management for business and
software environments.

Two dynamic and exciting fields relevant to this topic are Workflow
Management Systems (WfMS) and Ubiquitous Computing. WfMS are integrated
software tools for supporting the modeling, analysis, and enactment of
business processes. Ubiquitous computing involves the creation of
"intelligent" living and working spaces. Where computing power is
omnipresent and tailored to the user. The widespread use of computers and
increasing availability of online information has sparked interest in
employing automation to improve process management and the provision of
computing services. The field of workflow management has emerged as an
outgrowth of this interest in recent years as has the idea of ubiquitous
computing as seen by the growth in "online" hand-held organizers.
However these domains are characterized by rapidly changing requirements
and dynamic environments. Thus, technologies must provide reactivity
and flexibility to support their operational requirements for process
and service management.

The theme of this issue is that the AI community could be leveraged to
realize a vision for dynamic process management, at both the modeling
and technological levels. What are the hard problems in process
management and how can AI help? The focus of this issue will be on the
role that technologies emerging from international research communities
can play in the construction of tools that manage complex distributed
processes, while remaining robust, reactive, and adaptive in the face of
environmental changes.
