Decision Theory Models for Applications in Artificial Intelligence:
Concepts and Solutions
A book edited by Dr. L. Enrique Sucar and Dr. Eduardo F. Morales
INAOE, Mexico; and
Dr. Jesse Hoey
University of Dundee, U.K.

To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/

Introduction
One of the goals of artificial intelligence (AI) is creating
autonomous agents that must make decisions based on uncertain and
incomplete information. The goal is to design rational agents; that is
agents that must take the best action given the information available
and their goals. The term best usually means actions that maximize the
total expected reward in the future. Decision theory models provide a
general and sound framework for building rational agents.

Objective of the Book
The objective of the book is to provide an introduction to different
types of decision theory techniques, including MDPs, POMDPs, Influence
Diagrams,
Reinforcement Learning, etc., and illustrate their application in
artificial intelligence.

Target Audience
The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals and
researchers working in the field of artificial intelligence interested
in understanding and applying decision-theory models. Moreover, the
book will provide insights into the advantages and challenges of using
this type of models for developing intelligent systems that have to
take the best decisions under uncertainty.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Decision and utility theory
Influence diagrams
Dynamic decision networks
Markov decision processes (MDPs)
Partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs)
Applications in robotics, medicine, industry, etc.

        Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before
September 15, 2009, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the
mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter, including a
summary, preliminary table of contents and the main contributions.
Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by September 30, 2009
about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full
chapters are expected to be submitted by December 15, 2009. All
submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review process.
Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this
project.

Publisher
This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea
