*Postdoctoral Fellowship Proposal in Applied Simulation and Optimization*
Groundwater management presents challenging tasks to planners. Commonly, operations have to be designed over long periods of time in heterogeneous and uncertain environments. Each case is unique and typically involves multiple decision criteria and constraints over a wide range of levels in time and space. Modern methods of computer-based optimization, artificial intelligence and machine learning have evolved as elementary components of successful (ground)water management. Still, open questions remain about how to deal with uncertainty and how to express typical groundwater management problems in a stochastic framework. We are looking for highly-motivated young researchers from the field of simulation and optimization, geostatistics or from related disciplines such as geophysics, mathematics, or computer sciences. Candidates have ideally demonstrated excellence in terms of internationally competitive achievements, for instance high-ranked publications. The doctoral degree must not have been awarded before March 2009. We encourage candidates with high potential to apply for the ETH Zurich fellowship program. Successful applicants will develop a research plan tailored to their visions and collaborate with researchers from a newly-launched Swiss project funded by the National Science Foundation (SNF) and involving five Swiss research institutions and Stanford University. The fellowship will be conducted at the Engineering Geology Group of the Geological Institute, ETH Zurich, Switzerland.
Proposals for the fellowship program have to be submitted by March 1^st . Interested applicants are highly recommended to contact Dr. Peter Bayer, [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>, early before this deadline. The start of the Postdoctoral project of two years will be July 2011 or later. Standard ETH postdoctoral salary is highly attractive and starts with ca. 67.000EUR. Further information on the program can be found at www.vpf.ethz.ch/services/ETH_Fellows <http://www.vpf.ethz.ch/services/ETH_Fellows> .
