FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MEDICAL IMAGING USING BIO-INSPIRED AND SOFT
COMPUTING

(MIBISOC2013)

15 – 17 May 2013. Brussels (Belgium)

Organized by MIBISOC International Training Network (http://www.mibisoc-itn.eu)

SCOPE

Medical imaging (MI) is at the heart of many of today’s improved diagnostic and
treatment technologies. Computer-based solutions are vastly more capable of
both quantitative measurement of the medical condition and the pre-processing
tasks of filtering, sharpening, and focusing image detail. Bio-inspired and
Soft Computing (BC, SC) techniques have been successfully applied in each of
the fundamental steps of medical image processing and analysis (e.g.
restoration, segmentation, registration or tracking). The natural partnership
of humans and intelligent systems and machines in MI is to provide the
clinician with powerful tools to take better decisions regarding diagnostic and
treatment. The application of SC and BC methodologies in MI has increased in
the last few years due to their capability to deal with the uncertainty and
imprecision underlying most of real-world problems and, specifically, medical
applications requiring the use of image processing techniques.

MIBISOC2013 is organized as the main dissemination activity of the MIBISOC
project (http://www.mibisoc-itn.eu), an International Training Network (ITN)
among worldwide recognized institutions in the fields of BC, SC and MI:
European Centre for Soft Computing, Ghent University, Université Libre de
Bruxelles, University of Nottingham, University of Parma, University of
Granada, Henesis, and University of Freiburg. The objective of MIBISOC2013 is
to facilitate the promotion of novel problems, research, results, and future
directions in the growing interdisciplinary area of BC-SC applied to MI. It
will provide an opportunity to meet researchers working on these topics, make
new contacts and exchange ideas. It will also be used to establish contacts
with additional industrial organisations and hospitals interested in the area,
which will become potential users of the developments contributed by the ITN.

The conference will comprise oral and poster presentations, two plenary
lectures, an industry session, and related events. It will also include a gala
dinner in the city of Brussels. Presentation of already published high-quality
work (e.g. recently submitted journal papers, recently published journal
papers) is accepted and encouraged.

The conference is endorsed by the MIBISOC ITN. There is no conference fee and
the free registration includes the conference dinner and the coffee breaks. In
addition, a comprehensive scholarship programme is available to cover (partial)
costs of travel and accommodation for up to 50 attendees with accepted
contributions.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

The topics of interest for submission include, but are not limited to:

The application of Bio-inspired and Soft Computing techniques, such as

* Evolutionary Computation and other Metaheuristics
*       Swarm Intelligence
* Fuzzy Logic and Fuzzy Systems,
*       Neural Networks, and
* Bayesian/possibilistic networks and Probabilistic Reasoning,

to medical imaging areas such us

*       Image acquisition
*       Image restoration

*       Biomedical signal processing
*       Human activity recognition

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTED PAPERS

Prospective authors are invited to contribute high-quality full papers of at
most 8 pages length (IEEE style: two columns, single-spaced, including
abstract, figures and references, using 10 fonts, and with each page numbered).
Submissions of already published high-quality work (e.g. recently submitted
journal papers, recently published journal papers) for oral or poster
presentation are accepted and encouraged. The articles will be peer reviewed by
at least two independent IPC members. Conference proceedings will be in
electronic format registered with ISBN. The submission procedure is described
in the Conference website (http://www.softcomputing.es/mibisoc2013/).

SCHOLARSHIPS

There will be a large number of scholarships provided by the MIBISOC ITN for
those attendees presenting accepted contributions. The selected applicants will
receive a grant to support their travel and accommodation expenses. Up to 50
travel and accommodation grants will be available with different amounts
depending on the attendee's origin: 200€ for Belgians, 500€ for European, and
1000€ for non Europeans. The application and selection procedures are published
in the Conference website (http://www.softcomputing.es/mibisoc2013/).
