Dear members of the UAI mailing list, We would like to circulate the available position for a research fellow at the Roslin institute of University of Edinburgh that might be of interest to you or your colleagues.
Research Fellow *Salary Range:* £31,342 - £37,394 The Roslin Institute is a world-class centre for the quantitative genetics of populations, particularly in managed populations such as livestock, companion animals, forests and other plants. We have a vacancy for a post-doctoral researcher in computational genomics to work alongside Dr J. Hickey. The post-holder will work with Dr Hickey and collaborators in the research of the use of low-coverage sequencing methods for genetic evaluation and biological discovery in livestock, with the ultimate goal to be able to generate and utilise sequence level information on millions of individuals. The work will focus on the development of a flexible and scalable novel imputation algorithm that will form the backbone of the entire project. The developed algorithm will combine heuristic methods such as long-range phasing and probabilistic methods such as Hidden Markov Models and will need to scale to data sets with sequence level information on millions of individuals and needs to be able to handle highly heterogeneous input data (pedigrees of different type, population structures of different type, and a wide variety of genomic data (e.g. SNP, GBS, low-coverage sequence). The successful applicant will have a PhD (or near completion) in Quantitative Genetics, Computer Science, Statistics, Biology, Mathematics or some related area (e.g. Cartography). Fortran programming will form a significant component of the research and so she/he will be expected to have relevant experience or be willing to learn. The post is for 3 years funded by a BBSRC research project. The post-holder will join the Genetics and Genomics department at the Institute which comprises 18 group leaders, both desk based and lab based scientists. The department benefits from synergies arising from academic backgrounds including DNA-chemistry, statistics, mathematics and theoretical physics in addition to genetics.
