Postdoctoral researcher position in computational cognitive science

The Austerweil Lab at Brown University in the Department of Cognitive,
Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences is hiring one postdoctoral researcher to
start in Summer 2015. The lab focuses on a critical question at the interface
of perception and higher-level cognition: How do people form useful
representations of the world? We do so by using recent advances in statistics
and computer science to formulate ideal learner models to see how they solve
these problems and then test the model predictions using traditional behavioral
experimentation. Ideal learner models help us understand the knowledge people
use to solve problems because such knowledge must be made explicit for the
ideal learner model to successfully produce human behavior. In collaboration
with the rest of the lab, the postdoctoral researcher would develop novel ideal
representation learners and test them using behavioral experiments.

Requirements include a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., psychology,
neuroscience, cognitive science, or computer science) by the start date
(ideally summer 2015), proficiency in at least one computational modeling or
machine learning paradigm (e.g., Bayesian, connectionist, or logic-based
approaches), and an interest in human cognition (although previous research
experience with human behavioral experiments is not required).

Preference will be given to applicants who have previous experience with the
following skills: conducting web experiments, machine learning and behavioral
experimentation, and GPU programming (OpenCL in particular; one ongoing project
in the lab is developing the Massively Parallel Bayesian Nonparametric
Processes – a OpenCL-based toolkit of inference algorithms for Bayesian
nonparametric methods – see https://github.com/tqian86/MPBNP for the current
version.). Although prior research in cognitive science is not a requirement,
it is highly preferred and whoever fills the position should expect a portion
of their time devoted to developing and conducting online and laboratory
behavioral experiments.
