Linkoping University (Sweden) hereby advertises a position as PhD student in 
Statistics or Computer Science formally based at the Division of Statistics and 
Machine Learning (STIMA) at the Department of Computer and Information Science 
(IDA).

We are looking for one PhD student to do research in machine learning and 
causality together with Associate Professor Jose M. Peña. We aim to do research 
on the theoretical foundations of causality, develop new methods and algorithms 
for causal learning and inference, and applying these on real world data. We 
are primarily interested in using causal graphical models, although other 
frameworks may be considered as well. Our work is part of the project 
“Understanding society through register-based machine learning” leaded by the 
Institute for Analytical Sociology (IAS) at Linköping University. The project 
aims to use machine learning to analyze Swedish population registers in order 
to deepen our knowledge of key social issues. Therefore, we will collaborate 
with researchers at IAS and apply our findings on Swedish population register 
data.

Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD 
student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 
percent of full time.

Qualifications
The candidate should have a Master of Science degree in a relevant subject for 
the PhD position such as computer science, statistics, or mathematics. The 
applicant is expected to have good knowledge of computer science, statistics 
and machine learning. Knowledge and experience in causality and/or 
probabilistic graphical models is advantageous. Fluency in spoken and written 
English is a requirement.

Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a 
time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight 
years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four 
years´ full time research training.

Starting date
By agreement.

Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department’s salary scale.
