Hey everybody,
I just talked to Atul, who strongly recommends doing a preview/beta/
release candidate before the main release, so that we can have 1,000
people testing out the preview and finding bugs before we have 100,000
people downloading and using the real release.
I trust Atul's judgment in this area because he has a lot of
experience with making software releases.
So let me revise the plan a little bit.

The plans for the actual code remain unchanged; we're still going to
release the same version that we planned to release. We're just going
to label it and publicize it differently.

Today or tomorrow, we'll release a version called 0.5pre. We will
encourage people to download and try out 0.5pre, but we won't make a
major publicity push for it and we won't make it the default version
on addons.mozilla.com.

Then, we'll let people have a week or so to try this version out and
discover bugs. Next tuesday, July 30, we'll do the official 0.5
release, including all the most important bug fixes, and that's the
day we'll do a major publicity push and make 0.5 the new default
version for download from addons.mozilla.com.

How does that sound to everyone?
