Hi , This is Jia who is an engineer from Mozilla China.
I am not sure if this topic is related to the ubiquity project, but this is very much like the concept of the mouse based Ubiquity which Aza talked about before (http://www.azarask.in/blog/post/can-ubiquity- be-used-only-with-the-mouse/). And we have built similar search functions inside the Firefox China Edition. I would like to share some thoughts here and see if I can get any feedbacks here, :P The mouse based search functions are implemented in an add-on called Live Margins. In short words, you can just drag some words if you want to search them, then a floating popup window will be shown for all the results. But we don't let user choose which search verb he wants to use, we just search all the services for results brute-forcely and show the results if they returned a valid results. All the results are put together into different sections for browsing. You can checkout some screenshots here first and I think you can get what I am saying. And I am sorry there are lots of Chinese words. http://www.flickr.com/photos/46440...@n03/ In China, few users would adapt to using a command like UI doing search. They are more used to drag words or easier way to start some action. We have been implemented 10+ search verbs inside the Live Margins search, as you can see from the screenshots, there are Wikipedia, Baidu Wiki, Youdao Dictionary, Google Translation, Flickr, Google Image, Youku Videos (like Youtube), Tudou Videos, Douban Movies, Douban Books, VeryCD (provide P2P download resources), Google News, Some C2C shopping sites, Sina Stock Quotes, and also providing the basic search engines results all together. Basically, when user drags a word, I will send request to all those search interfaces and mashup all the results together. I know this is really brute force and we are considering building a backend verb classification service to categorize the words user drags into search verbs which would be used in the search. So that is all for the search functions inside Firefox China Edition. Just wonder if this can intrigue any thoughts, :). Any comments would be appreciated and thank you very much for all your time. Best and Regards, Jia Mi
