Failing UPS's is why we came up with driving the devices directly off 
deep cycle batteries.   Yes the devices charging the batteries fail but 
(usually) not in a fashion to damage devices downstream from them.  And 
batteries usually give off clues as to if they are going to fail before 
they do.
