So we have a 2.5 mile link in central Texas. You can read about it here. https://community.ubnt.com/t5/airFiber-Stories/AF24HD-2-5-mile-link/cns-p/1656005 Over the last year we have noticed drops during heavy rains but only momentary. We have set ours up to drop the ethernet if the signal capacity degrades to 400 Meg. The ethernet stays off for 2 minutes after 400 Meg capacity is reached again. That is the first step. The second part of the magic is a high capacity 5 Gig link for the backup which is automatically switched over. The switch over is done by to CR1009 routers, one on each end. I think a 3011 would do the trick as well, but overkill never hurts. Using layer 2 bonding and link monitoring via ARP, customers rarely lose a ping. My view is this, yes the backup link is slower, but the customers are still up. Typically all traffic is back to the AF24HD within 5 minutes.
So to summarize, as the only link, forget it for the distance you mentioned, a backup is needed. Also, if you can bite the bullet, go 11 GHz and forget about the rain fade. We are deploying B11’s and at that distance seeing full 1 gig across them. The AF11’s might be great, I am not sure what speed you can get across them. It will fade heavily on any rain.
